Astrid Pérez, the President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met with representatives from the ‘Rompe el Silencio Canarias’ platform on Wednesday to discuss school bullying and violence. This initiative, led by families impacted by such issues, was brought to prominence following the tragic suicide of Lucía, a 12-year-old autistic girl in Puerto de la Cruz in February 2025.
Laura Fernández, Lucía’s mother and president of the association, conveyed the urgent need to enhance protections for minors against bullying and other forms of violence in educational settings.
During the meeting, the platform representatives highlighted the widespread nature of the problem, calling for increased support and visibility to address it effectively. The Canary Islands Parliament issued a statement emphasising the requirement for a coordinated institutional response.
Pérez stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to prevent and detect all forms of violence in schools and to provide protection and support for affected children and their families. “It is time to act; we cannot allow any child to be unprotected by the system. We must continue to make progress,” she remarked.
