The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a special weather warning for the coming days due to heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas affecting mainland Spain and the Canary Islands, expected to last until Wednesday or possibly Thursday.
Aemet indicated that a large system of low pressure to the west of the mainland, including a significant storm named Bruna, will bring persistent and very heavy showers, potentially causing local flooding and river rises. Areas previously affected by summer wildfires are at heightened risk for particularly severe rainfall.
In the Canary Islands, rain will intensify late on Saturday in the western part of the archipelago, spreading to the other islands by Sunday. Tenerife could see up to 120 litres of rain per square meter, while La Palma might receive between 150 and 180 litres.
Winds from the west and southwest will strengthen, with very strong gusts in mountainous and exposed areas of the islands.
After a brief respite on Monday, with lighter rain and winds in the first half of the day, conditions will worsen again from Tuesday afternoon onward.
On the mainland, heavy rainfall is anticipated to start intensifying on Sunday afternoon and will continue at least until Wednesday. The most significant rain on Sunday is expected in the southwest, particularly in Extremadura, western Andalusia, nearby regions of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as Galicia and western Castilla y León. Some areas, like Huelva and northern Extremadura, could exceed 40 litres, while rainfall in Gredos may top 60 litres.
Wind gusts could surpass 70 km/h in Galicia, along the Cantabrian coast, the Pyrenees, the Central System, and other elevated areas in the west, with isolated values above 100 km/h. In western Galicia, waves are expected to reach heights of 5-6 metres, with near 4 metres off western Andalusia.
Monday is likely to be one of the most challenging days, with rainfall exceeding 60 litres in western and southern Galicia, areas of western mainland Spain, and western Andalusia. In the western Central System and northern Extremadura, totals may reach 120-150 litres, while gusts in higher northern regions, especially the Picos de Europa, could top 100-120 km/h, and reach 70-90 km/h in mountainous areas of the west, central Spain, and the Strait.
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, heavy rain will continue across much of the mainland, mainly in Galicia, western Castilla y León, Extremadura, and western Andalusia.
In the Canary Islands, heavier rain is forecast to return, particularly on Wednesday, with accumulated totals of 80-120 litres on La Palma and Tenerife, locally exceeding 150 litres, while La Gomera and Gran Canaria may see between 40 and 80 litres.
Strong winds will persist, with gusts of 70-90 km/h and isolated peaks of 100-120 km/h in high and exposed areas.
Aemet indicated that after Thursday, a gradual decrease in rainfall is expected, although heavy showers might still occur in certain parts of the mainland.
