The Gran Canaria Island Council has awarded the OHLA-Sando consortium a contract worth €192.89 million for the renovation and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium. The project, set to take 30 months, aims to complete the works a year ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The consortium’s proposal was selected for its strong performance in the bidding process, demonstrating both financial capability and execution capacity.

The renovation involves a complete overhaul of the stadium, including the demolition of existing structures that need replacing. Following this, new elements will be integrated, and roofing will be installed, requiring careful planning due to the project’s scale and technical complexity.

The upgrade meets requirements set by UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and FIFA for international competitions.

Additionally, €46.7 million of the budget is earmarked for workforce costs, which is roughly 24.2% of the total without tax. This allocation is part of a financial strategy for enhancing the island’s sports infrastructure.

Both companies in the consortium have significant experience in public works, with OHLA involved in major projects like access improvements at 13 New York Metro stations and bridge reconstructions on Illinois’ Tri-State Tollway. Sando specialises in infrastructure and water management, with key projects including the expansion of Axarquía County Hospital and renovations in Tenerife.
