The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is enhancing local cultural heritage awareness through its ‘Landscapes with History’ programme, which has introduced two new heritage routes set to explore significant historical and archaeological sites.

The upcoming events are scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, featuring a walk from Betancuria to Morro del Humilladero, and on 7 November, a trek through the Tinojay ravine in La Oliva.

Rayco León, the island’s Cultural Heritage Councillor, emphasised the value of such initiatives in promoting the understanding and preservation of Fuerteventura’s cultural wealth. “These routes allow us to explore our history firsthand, deepen our connection to places that shape our identity, and highlight the importance of safeguarding them for future generations,” he said.

Route from Betancuria to Morro del Humilladero

The first route takes place on Saturday, 31 October, from 09:00 to 13:00, and is classified as moderately difficult. Starting from the historic centre of Betancuria, participants will visit key sites such as the Church of Santa María, the Convent of San Buenaventura, and the Hermitage of San Diego.

Before heading to the archaeological site at Morro del Humilladero, participants will stop at the Archaeological Museum to learn about the indigenous population of Fuerteventura. The final stretch will uncover this site and its rock engravings, including podomorphs, highlighting the significance of this archaeological heritage.

Registrations are now open on the website www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. To assist with transport, the Cabildo will provide a bus service from Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, Corralejo, La Oliva, and Puerto del Rosario.

Exploring the Tinojay Ravine on 7 November

The second route, set for Saturday, 7 November, runs from 09:00 to 13:00 and also features a moderate difficulty level. This walk will explore the Tinojay ravine, renowned for its unique boat-shaped rock engravings that represent vessels, making it an exceptional site for engaging with ancient visual expressions.

The visit will highlight the historical and cultural significance of these engravings, as well as the importance of preserving them as part of the island’s archaeological heritage.

Registration Now Open for ‘Landscapes with History’

Sign-ups opened on 26 October at www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. There will also be bus services available from Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, and Puerto del Rosario.

With these new initiatives, the ‘Landscapes with History’ programme continues to promote Fuerteventura’s heritage through guided tours that link history, culture, and the island’s landscapes.
