VOX has announced that it will not field its own candidates for the Senate in Fuerteventura or the rest of the Canary Islands during the upcoming general elections on 29 November. This decision, which also impacts Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is part of an electoral agreement with the Partido Popular (PP) to align their candidacies for the Senate.

In a statement, VOX explained that this move is aimed at “avoiding vote fragmentation in the Upper House” amidst a political landscape shaped by alliances proposed by the PSOE and other left-leaning parties. Despite this, VOX will still run candidates for the Congress of Deputies in Las Palmas, led by Alberto Rodríguez Almeida along with Inés Cuartero and Adrián Rubio.

PP campaign director Miguel Tellado confirmed the agreement on Monday, revealing that the PP would include “independent” candidates proposed by VOX in regions where it will not contest with its own lists.

This announcement puts to rest speculation from national media outlets like The Objective and El País, which had suggested that VOX was pushing to stand alone in Senate elections in regions such as the Canary Islands and Catalonia.

VOX will also withdraw from Senate candidacies in Cádiz, Valencia, Castellón, and the Balearic Islands, as reported by the party’s communication departments. In fourteen other provinces, including Sevilla, Huelva, and Asturias, they will present a single candidate for the Senate. In the remaining twenty-three provinces, they will continue with their usual candidate submissions.

Meanwhile, the Partido Popular will not be presenting Senate candidates in Gipuzkoa, Girona, and Tarragona as part of the same agreement. Despite these compromises, VOX maintains that the pact does not mean abandoning its political differences with the PP, but rather reflects a shared goal of achieving a change in government.
