A boat carrying 59 migrants, including three women and four minors from sub-Saharan Africa, arrived in El Hierro early on Monday. The Salvamar Navia, a rescue vessel, assisted in bringing them to the port of La Restinga at 6:45 AM.
This follows a surge in migration over the past week, with 1,539 individuals arriving on roughly 20 boats. The situation has prompted authorities to reactivate the reception and referral system to manage the increasing numbers.
On Monday at 5:00 AM, a new vessel was detected by radar about 17.6 kilometres from La Restinga. The Salvamar Navia provided assistance to this boat, ensuring the safe landing of the migrants.
In a separate development, the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands reported that on Sunday, 471 migrants who had arrived by boat were transferred from El Hierro to resources in Gran Canaria. This move, facilitated by a ferry from the port of La Estaca, is part of efforts to alleviate pressure on the limited facilities on the island, with around 900 migrants transferred since Friday.
