The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has launched the latest edition of the ‘Ponte en Marcha’ programme aimed at encouraging active ageing. This initiative, spearheaded by Nori Machín, is part of the island’s broader ‘Más Vital’ project and for the 2026-2027 season, it introduces an innovative format featuring theatrical literary routes.
The programme will run over six days from November to May, offering local seniors the chance to explore adapted walking trails of moderate difficulty while appreciating the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Each route will feature performances by actors dressed in character and thematic musical acts to conclude each day.
The programme was officially presented on Monday, attended by political representatives and technical teams from the seven municipalities on the island. Oswaldo Betancort, the Cabildo president, highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the well-being of the elderly community, noting that the initiative began in April 2024 to promote physical activity through hiking.
Betancort expressed a desire for seniors to feel valued and integrated within the community, stating, “We want our parents and grandparents to leave their homes, feel excited, socialise, share memories, and most importantly, feel active.”
He emphasised that the programme not only promotes physical health through adapted hiking but also enriches participants’ cultural experiences. This year, it has evolved into a series of theatrical literary walks designed to enhance both physical and intellectual engagement.
Nori Machín, the responsible councillor, reiterated the Cabildo’s commitment to increasing cultural participation opportunities for seniors, merging physical activity with local knowledge and shared experiences. This edition also introduces a ‘Ponte en Marcha’ passport that participants can stamp after each walk.
The routes for the 2026-2027 programme will draw inspiration from the works and historical research of environmentalist Nacho Romero, who will provide a literary and historical thread throughout the various walks.
The calendar includes six events expected to attract up to 500 seniors each. The first walk is set for 21 November 2026, starting at Tinajo-La Santa with a focus on ‘Ana Viciosa: La Señora de Tinajo’. Other walks will follow, including routes from Teguise to La Caleta de Famara on 30 January 2027, and concluding with an event in Arrecife on 8 May 2027.
Interested participants can register through their local councils, which will facilitate information and coordination for the activities.
