Fuerteventura’s Cabildo is launching two new heritage trails as part of its ‘Paisajes con Historia’ programme, aimed at connecting locals with the island’s significant cultural and archaeological sites. The first trail will take place on Saturday, 31 October, covering a route from Betancuria to the Morro del Humilladero, while the second will follow on 7 November, exploring the Tinojay ravine in La Oliva.

Rayco León, the island’s Cultural Heritage Councillor, emphasised the value of such initiatives for raising awareness and preserving Fuerteventura’s rich heritage. “These routes allow us to discover our history first-hand, better understand the spaces that form part of our identity, and recognise the importance of protecting them for future generations,” he said.

The first route starts on 31 October from 09:00 to 13:00 and is rated as medium difficulty. Participants will depart from Betancuria’s historic centre and visit notable sites, including the Church of Santa María, the Convent of San Buenaventura, and the Hermitage of San Diego. Before reaching the archaeological site at Morro del Humilladero, there will be a stop at the Archaeological Museum to learn more about the island’s Aboriginal population. The final segment will feature ancient rock engravings, including podomorphs, highlighting the significance of this archaeological heritage.

Those interested can register now at www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. To assist with transport, the Cabildo will provide a bus service from Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, Corralejo, La Oliva, and Puerto del Rosario.

The second route, on 7 November, will also run from 09:00 to 13:00 with a medium difficulty level. This trail will explore the Tinojay ravine, noted for its unique barquiform rock engravings resembling boats, making it a fascinating location to engage with the island’s ancient artistic expressions. The tour will discuss the historical and cultural significance of these engravings and the importance of conserving them as part of the island’s archaeological heritage.

Registration for this route will open on 26 October at www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com, with a similar bus service offered from Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, and Puerto del Rosario.

These new offerings continue to promote awareness of Fuerteventura’s heritage through guided tours that blend history, culture, and the stunning landscapes of the island.
