Born on 4 July 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, Saint initially considered a teaching career but transitioned to acting through university theatre, radio, and early television. She honed her craft at the Actors Studio in New York, eventually breaking into film.

Saint’s film debut was marked by her powerful performance as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 film “On the Waterfront,” opposite Marlon Brando. This role garnered her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955, just days after the birth of her first child.

Rather than following a traditional Hollywood path, Saint chose to limit her roles to maintain her family life with her husband, television director Jeffrey Hayden, and their two children. They were married for 65 years until Hayden’s death in 2016.

In 1959, she starred as Eve Kendall in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” a role that cemented her legacy. Saint portrayed a complex character who becomes entangled in a web of espionage alongside Cary Grant, making the film a cornerstone of American suspense cinema.

Saint’s talent extended beyond film; she frequently returned to television, earning an Emmy Award in 1990 for her work in “People Like Us.” She received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her contributions to both film and television.

Even in her later years, she remained active, appearing as Martha Kent in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” and lending her voice to animated characters, bridging her remarkable career into the 21st century.

In 2018, at 93, she made an appearance at the Oscars, a poignant reminder of her connection to Hollywood’s rich history. Saint embodied a generation of actors who transformed the art of performance, moving seamlessly between stage and screen.

Her discerning choice of roles kept her from the constant glare of fame, and she often expressed a preference for a stable family life over the demands of stardom. Alongside Hayden, she cherished a long-standing relationship with the literature of Willa Cather, creating reading performances across the United States.

Eva Marie Saint’s passing marks the end of an era. She is survived by two children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy that spans seven decades and continues to resonate with audiences today.
