Yaiza’s mayor, Óscar Noda, stated during an interview on Crónicas Radio’s “Entre Barrios” programme that Pedro San Ginés, the Secretary General of Coalición Canaria (CC) in Lanzarote, suggested he could be included in the party’s Senate list, potentially even leading it. This proposal follows CC’s unsuccessful bid to place Chaxiraxi Niz, leader of Compromiso por Haría, at the forefront.

While Noda did not provide specific details, he made it clear that CC persistently urges him and his party, Unidos por Yaiza (UPY), to join their project but only brings up positions rather than concrete initiatives. Despite any offers, he and his colleagues from Juntos Por Lanzarote have decided against backing the candidacy led by Daisy Villalba, which has support from CC and other local parties promoting unity in nationalism.

Noda expressed skepticism about the sincerity of collaboration proposals, remarking, “It’s difficult to support those who have been critical of me. I want to focus on unlocking vital projects and services for my municipality rather than personal gains.”

Moreover, Noda commented on the recent hostility from CC and questioned their motives: “If they are so self-sufficient, why the continued pressure on me? They should concentrate on resolving outstanding issues in Yaiza and allow me to do my work.”

Regarding his relationship with Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, Noda acknowledged that a rivalry exists but claimed it never interferes with governance. He highlighted his commitment to hard work over publicity, saying, “My style prioritises management over photo opportunities.”

In response to a recent violent incident in Playa Blanca, Noda acknowledged the public’s concerns and highlighted his ongoing discussions about increased local policing. He noted that while crime rates in Yaiza are relatively low compared to the rest of the Canary Islands, residents feel safer with more visible police presence.

Lastly, Noda denied allegations from YAS president Luis Ureta about “sequestration” within UPY, suggesting that perhaps CC is the one usurping local parties. He expressed the need for clarity on these issues and reiterated his duty to prioritize the needs of Yaiza’s residents over political theatrics.
