To mark World Drowning Prevention Day on Saturday, 25 July, the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Emergency and Security Consortium has issued vital safety recommendations.

The aim is to raise awareness about the dangers present at beaches, pools, and other aquatic environments, especially during the summer months. Francisco J. Aparicio, president of the Consortium, noted that drowning is a significant cause of unintentional death in individuals aged between 1 and 24.

Key risk factors include reckless behaviour, lack of supervision for children, swimming in unmonitored areas, alcohol or drug consumption, and ignorance of sea currents.

Continuous Vigilance for Children
The Consortium emphasises that child drownings can occur quickly and silently. Parents and guardians are urged to maintain constant supervision of children while they are in or near water, rather than relying on other children or lifeguards. A baby can drown in just a few centimetres of water, so extra caution is advised in baths and inflatable pools.

Recommendations for Beaches and Pools
At beaches, it’s crucial to heed flag warnings, avoiding swimming with a red flag and exercising caution with a yellow flag. Opt for monitored areas, and if caught in a current, swim parallel to the shore until clear.

In pools, avoid running, pushing, or engaging in risky play by the edge, and choose facilities with lifeguards and secure perimeters. Those who are not proficient swimmers or are participating in water sports should wear approved life jackets instead of inflatable floats.

The Consortium also alerts against diving from bridges or shallow areas, as this can lead to serious injuries.

Emergency Response
During hot days, remember to stay hydrated, seek shaded areas, and apply sunscreen frequently. It’s advisable to avoid swimming at night or after alcohol consumption.

In the event of an accident, follow the PAS method: protect the area, call 112 immediately, and only provide help if you have basic first aid knowledge.
