Weather Alert for the Canary Islands: Strong Winds and High Temperatures
The Canary Islands are bracing for severe weather this Friday, with yellow warnings in effect across the archipelago. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and the Directorate General for Emergencies have warned of strong winds, rough seas, and soaring temperatures.
Wind gusts could reach up to 80 km/h, and parts of Gran Canaria may see temperatures rise to 37°C. Both land and coastal regions are expected to experience these conditions, which are attributed to heightened north-easterly trade winds and a warm air mass affecting inland and elevated areas. Consequently, the regional government has activated its Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Phenomena.
Affected Areas for Strong Winds
Warnings are in place for strong gusts across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and El Hierro, particularly in exposed regions such as southeastern and northwestern slopes, as well as lower mountainous areas. In La Gomera, gusts could even exceed 80 km/h.
A pre-alert has also been issued for southern areas of Anaga, the metropolitan region of Tenerife, and parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Authorities are urging caution in exposed areas, especially on roads and in open spaces where loose objects might be blown about.
Sea Conditions and Wave Risks
Aemet has issued a yellow warning for coastal regions, including El Hierro, La Gomera, and various coastlines of La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. At sea, north-easterly winds are expected to be force 7, resulting in rough conditions with waves potentially reaching 4.25 metres offshore.
These hazardous maritime conditions may pose risks to coastal activities and small vessels, with authorities advising against undue risks and urging adherence to safety warnings.
Temperatures Expected to Soar
Inland areas and higher elevations are predicted to see a rise in temperatures, particularly in the southern half of Fuerteventura and various parts of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Temperatures are likely to range from 30°C to 34°C in Fuerteventura and Tenerife, while Gran Canaria may record highs of up to 37°C in lower regions.
The combination of heat, wind, and dryness is expected to create discomfort, especially in areas shielded from cooling sea breezes. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and limit physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day.
