Pedro Sánchez Begins Summer Holiday in Lanzarote
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has kicked off his summer holiday by returning to La Mareta, the official residence in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote. He arrived at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport at 1:07 PM local time on Saturday, flying in on an Air Force Falcon jet. By 1:30 PM, he was on his way to La Mareta in a van.
Since 2020, Sánchez has frequently chosen Lanzarote for vacations, especially during the summer, as well as at Easter and Christmas. To ensure safety during his stay, the Maritime Captaincy of Las Palmas has established a temporary navigation exclusion zone off the coast of Teguise until August 24.
Prior to his getaway, Sánchez addressed significant issues, including forest fires on the mainland and increased migration pressures in Ceuta. On Friday, he visited the city where irregular arrivals have surpassed 50,000 this week, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
La Mareta was originally built for King Hussein of Jordan, who gifted it to King Juan Carlos I in the late 1980s. The Spanish royal family made it available to National Heritage in 2015. The residence has hosted various world leaders, including former German Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schröder, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, and Czech President Václav Havel, alongside previous Spanish leaders.
During past visits, Sánchez has crossed paths with members of his cabinet, as well as Catalonia’s current president Salvador Illa. Last year, he met with the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, at the Lanzarote Cabildo.
