NUDETOPIA Launches in Gran Canaria, Celebrating Body Positivity and Self-Love
On August 8, Gran Canaria photographer Maty Chevrière will unveil NUDETOPIA, an exclusive exhibition aimed at redefining the female body as a space of freedom and self-acceptance. This fleeting experience will only be available for a limited time, highlighting the need to appreciate the body beyond societal judgement.
Chevrière, a Las Palmas native, has faced challenges in sharing her vision through platforms like Instagram, where she experienced limited reach on certain images promoting the event. Despite the evolving landscape, where perceptions of the female form shift with time and technology, her work seeks to engage audiences, prompting them to consider the transformation of the female body from an object of consumption to a medium of self-exploration.
While NUDETOPIA embraces eroticism, Chevrière strives to present it free from historical constraints. Her photography explores themes such as motherhood, fragility, and resilience, challenging viewers to rethink their perspectives in an appearance-focused society.
“NUDETOPIA is a universe for self-love,” she explains, aiming to merge photography with literature, dance, and even gastronomy. For her, the body is the first home and language we learn.
Her journey as a photographer began at the age of 16 when she first picked up an analogue camera. What started as a personal exploration evolved into a professional career after she acquired a digital camera in 2011. Now, Chevrière uses her lens to question society’s relationship with the body, combining her artistic practice with a therapeutic intent to foster self-acceptance.
After years away, returning to Gran Canaria holds special significance for her. She describes it as a “universal orgasm,” encapsulating both a homecoming and the completion of a creative circle. The exhibition promises to engage visitors in an immersive experience, provoking thoughts around why a nude body might invoke discomfort compared to other more normalized forms of violence.
NUDETOPIA will take place at La Escarlata on Calle Galicia, featuring 34 photographs alongside a performance by dancer Violeta Vargas. This event will occur only once, emphasizing the transient nature of art in today’s world. Chevrière invites attendees to embrace the moment, reminding them of the value of experiences that cannot be repeated.
However, Chevrière faces contrasting pressures. While algorithms may suppress her artistic expressions, she notes that societal hesitation around nudity persists, revealing widespread discomfort with the subject. Nevertheless, she continues to capture images that affirm the right to exist freely within one’s body.
The exhibition runs from 5 PM to 11 PM, promising an unforgettable celebration of Canarian talent. Chevrière, who originally pursued painting, discovered her passion for photography as a more immediate means of artistic expression, ultimately shifting her focus to portraying the human experience with vulnerability and authenticity.
Her work is displayed in publications like Vogue and Madame Figaro Japan and culminates in her recent book, “NUDETOPIA: The A to Z of Erotism Through the Eyes of Maty Chevrière.” This collection marks not just a celebration of eroticism, but a deeper dialogue on body, identity, and the human condition, all returning to her roots in Gran Canaria.
