The local council in La Laguna is developing a new temporary parking area in Valle Tabares, aiming to create around 30 new parking spaces to meet high demand from residents and the local educational community.
This initiative is being led by the Department of Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility, using an 807-square-metre municipal plot located at the entrance to Valle Tabares, between the main access road and La Era de Tabares street.
Councillor Ángel Chinea explained that the council is replicating a successful strategy employed in other areas to increase temporary parking spaces. This involves utilising municipal land designated for future public use but not immediately needed for that purpose.
“We request provisional use of the plot from the Urban Planning Department, allowing us to maximise its utility until the planned use in the General Plan is put into effect,” Chinea stated.
The new parking area, strategically located near the Cisneros Alter educational centre, could also serve as a drop-off and pick-up point for students, improving vehicle turnover and alleviating parking congestion during peak times.
Work began in August, with the department fencing the site and carrying out excavation to bring the ground level with the street. The project includes laying down recycled asphalt from other municipal roadworks.
The council anticipates completion by early September, ensuring the new parking facility will be ready in time for the start of the school year.
Chinea noted that this project is part of a wider scheme to utilise available public land across La Laguna to establish new parking facilities. The goal is to address longstanding requests from the public for more parking options while the land remains unneeded for its intended future use.
