The Yaiza Council has asked the Canary Islands Government and the Lanzarote Cabildo for an update on the status of 42 public homes bought at the Los Ajaches residential complex in Playa Blanca. The homes have been awaiting allocation for over 18 months since their purchase was completed.
The deal, formalised on 30 January 2025, involved an investment of €9.3 million, funded by both the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo. Yaiza’s Mayor, Óscar Noda, pointed out that the homes have not yet been handed over to their new occupants and is seeking clarity on the current status of the allocation process.
Noda has requested a meeting with María del Pino de León Hernández, the director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute, to discuss the home’s allocation. The council had previously been informed that the process would reach completion in June, but is currently uncertain about its status.
Additionally, the mayor wishes to discuss the development of 136 affordable rental homes on a 42,000 square metre plot that the council has allocated to the Canary Islands Government. Yaiza has noted that the project is ready and has proposed that it be financed through the State Housing Plan 2026-2030.
Around 400 residents in the municipality are reportedly waiting for public housing, leading the council to believe that the 42 homes from Los Ajaches will not sufficiently meet current demand, although they would add to the public rental stock.
Noda has also requested a meeting with the Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort, as he believes the island institution contributed to financing the homes’ purchase. He is pressing for information on the allocation process from the Cabildo as well.
Furthermore, the council highlighted that licenses have been granted for privately promoted protected housing in Montaña Roja and proposed that the 76 completed homes from the third phase of Los Ajaches be included in the public housing stock, potentially acquired by the Cabildo or the Canary Islands Government.
