Canary Islands Calls for Improved Transport Links to the Mainland
The Canary Islands Government is urging the Transport Ministry to enhance connectivity by designating Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura as a public service obligation (OSP).
Pablo Rodríguez, the region’s Public Works, Housing, and Mobility Minister, announced he will send a letter to the Ministry to address the issue. He stressed that the current OSP contract between the Canary Islands and Cádiz expires on 30 June 2026, and without a bidding process before its end, Fuerteventura has lost its direct link to Cádiz.
According to Rodríguez, this disconnection is harming the island’s competitiveness and leading to higher costs and longer transit times for local businesses. He highlighted that transporting goods from Puerto del Rosario to Cádiz now requires going through Arrecife or Las Palmas, complicating logistics for island firms.
Rodríguez stated that this request for a dedicated service is not new. His department had previously reached out to the Transport Ministry to remind them of the impending contract expiry and the need for a replacement service. He emphasised that it is crucial for the new OSP to include the connection from Puerto del Rosario.
