Herminio Fernández and Isabel Valido Crowned Champions in Fuerteventura Swim Race
Herminio Fernández Alperi and Isabel Valido Carreño emerged victorious in the XXVII Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos-Fuerteventura, held on Sunday. The challenging event, which attracted 300 swimmers—fully booked within eight minutes—was marked by rough sea conditions.
Organised by the Herbania Sports Club, the swim covered approximately 3,500 metres from Lobos Island to the Corralejo Marina. Despite the difficult waters, support vessels, including Zodiacs and kayaks, ensured participant safety throughout the race.
In the men’s category, Herminio Fernández, representing Santa Olaya, clinched first place with a time of 40 minutes and 49 seconds, repeating his win from 2025. Tomás Carrascosa Hester from Fuertri took second with 42:57, while the 15-year-old Erik Manuel Suárez Martín of Nadamas finished third in 42:59.
Isabel Valido Carreño, from the Las Palmas Swimming Club, dominated the women’s category, finishing in 49:15. Lola Fernández Andrés, also 15 and from CN Salinas Santa Lucía, came second at 49:37, followed by Elisa Razzi from Fuertri with a time of 50:32.
The event featured participants aged 15 to 84, representing eleven nationalities, including Spain, Italy, Germany, the UK, and Argentina. Female participation accounted for nearly 40% of the entrants, with swimmers travelling from various locations across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain.
Over a hundred volunteers contributed to the event’s success, which also involved local emergency services and officials. Inma Díaz, president of Herbania, praised the swimmers for tackling the challenging conditions, saying it was rewarding to witness such diverse participants complete the race with smiles.
The day included lively entertainment with a parade and live music, all in support of the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Winners received €250 each, while second and third place holders received local cheese and products.
The ceremony was attended by notable officials, including the Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco.
