Traffic Disruptions in Arrecife Due to Drainage Works
Major traffic diversions and restrictions have begun in the Cuatro Esquinas area of Arrecife, starting this Monday, July 27th, as drainage construction commences. This key junction, where León y Castillo, Cienfuegos, Franco, Pérez Galdós, and Jacinto Borges streets converge, has become problematic during heavy rainfall.
Mayor Yonathan de León, overseeing the Public Works Department, explained that these works will occur during the summer when vehicle traffic is lower, thereby minimising disruption. This timing also anticipates potential challenges from September’s high tides, which can flood the area due to its proximity to sea level.
De León urged local residents, businesses, and drivers to remain patient, as the construction aims to install much-needed drains and develop underground chambers for new stormwater pumps. Historically, tidal waters reached the Cuatro Esquinas until infrastructure changes in the 1980s altered the flow.
The mayor emphasised that Arrecife is now enhancing its drainage systems across various city areas, with ongoing projects around Charco de San Ginés and Vía Medular. The Cuatro Esquinas drainage works complement recent improvements on Jacinto Borges and will precede further drain installations in more than 20 streets in the Argana and Maneje neighbourhoods. The total investment in these drainage improvements during this term is nearly €5 million.
Mario González Altube, the Councillor for Mobility and Transport, noted that the diversions were planned to coincide with the recent resurfacing of several roads in El Lomo, completed this week, allowing for the necessary traffic changes.
Information signs have been set up over the weekend, with restrictions now in place on Cienfuegos, Franco, León y Castillo, Pérez Galdós, Gran Canaria, and Jacinto Borges streets. The Mobility and Transport department has designated taxi stops and loading zones for deliveries in the area.
