The 37th Lanzarote Craft Fair will take place from September 10 to 15 in Mancha Blanca, Tinajo, celebrating the region’s traditional straw hats. This year’s event is set to be the largest yet, featuring over 140 artisans and institutions, up from 120 last year. Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, noted this growth illustrates the sector’s strength and encouraged locals to purchase crafts as a means of preserving culture and supporting the island’s economy.
The fair aims for official recognition as a “regional fair” by the regional government due to the high demand from artisans across the Canary Islands. Aroa Revelo, the regional craft councillor, is advocating for this status.
This year’s fair will pay homage to traditional hats and straw craftsmanship, reflecting the importance of this skill in rural life. A special area titled “Heritage in Our Hands” will feature veteran artisans demonstrating their crafts to pass on their skills to younger generations.
The cultural programme includes a diverse array of performances, combining folk music with new shows such as “Acatife, Echoes of Woman.” Improvements in transport logistics will benefit the expected 70,000 visitors, with bus stops relocated closer to the event for easier access.
