Short-Term Contracting Dominates Lanzarote’s Job Market
Lanzarote is witnessing a surge in very short-term employment contracts. According to data from the Canary Employment Observatory (OBECAN), 46.4% of the 2,511 temporary contracts signed in June were for one month or less, totalling 1,164 contracts. This is the highest monthly figure for such contracts in the first half of the year.
The number of very short-term contracts saw a significant rise from May, which had 799 contracts, an increase of 365 contracts in just one month. June topped the year’s contract activity, surpassing figures from earlier months: March (2,255), February (2,115), and January (1,990).
In addition to the short contracts, 311 contracts fell between one and three months (12.4%), while 258 contracts lasted between three and six months (10.3%). Contracts exceeding six months were fewer, with 69 contracts (2.7%) and another 709 contracts (28.2%) classified as having an indeterminate duration.
Half of Temporary Contracts Last Less Than a Month
The first half of the year has mirrored these trends. Of the 8,210 temporary contracts between January and June, half (50.2%) were for one month or less. Contracts lasting one to three months made up 21.8%, while those with indeterminate durations accounted for 15.5%. More stable contracts remain rare, with those lasting three to six months at just 4.9% and those exceeding six months at 5.4%.
These statistics highlight the persistent prevalence of short-term contracts in Lanzarote, reflecting the increased economic activity as the summer season approaches.
