Canary Footballer Yéremy Pino Honoured in Las Palmas
Canary footballer Yéremy Pino has returned to his home island to receive multiple accolades, including recognition from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, which will name a sports facility in the Atlantic district after him.
Following warm receptions from the Canary Islands government and the Gran Canaria Cabildo, Pino was welcomed by Mayor Carolina Darias, who expressed that such occasions are rare. She announced the dedication of the facility in the area where he grew up.
Reflecting on the historic event, the World Champion spoke about his feelings and the significance of representing his home in the world of football.
“It’s been a week since we became world champions—I’m feeling absolutely euphoric,” he said. “I still can’t believe it. In a few days, months, or years, I will truly appreciate what we achieved, as it’s the highest honour possible.”
Pino also reflected on a tense moment during their match against Uruguay. “I felt dark, scared of the pain I was experiencing,” he explained. “We feared the worst until the MRI the next day confirmed I was okay. Thankfully, I was able to stay and enjoy the rest of the tournament.”
Discussing his team’s journey, he remarked on the intensity they faced early on. “We were united from the first match. We had our nerves, but after that, we gained confidence and dominated our opponents.”
Addressing the controversies surrounding the final, he stated, “Other teams caused issues for themselves. We maintained incredible respect and values instilled by our coach, Luis de la Fuente, from the beginning.”
Pino shared his pride in playing alongside fellow Canary, Pedri, and being part of a legacy alongside football legends like Pedro Rodríguez and David Silva. “Playing with Pedri is amazing; he’s among the best in the world and an incredible person. I’m honoured to represent the islands with him.”
When asked about the pressure of representing Canary Islands on a grand stage, he said, “It doesn’t weigh on me. It’s something I’ve embraced from a young age. I carry the flag of the Canaries wherever I go with pride.”
Looking ahead, Pino, who has already won numerous trophies, is now dreaming of future achievements. “For now, I want a holiday, and then hopefully, one day, the Champions League. I made it to the semifinals with Villarreal, and I aim to reach that pinnacle.”
On the prospect of returning to play in Gran Canaria, he expressed hope. “Perhaps one day, I would love that, as would my family. It would be a dream. I’ve played there once, and it gave me goosebumps.”
