UD Las Palmas Open to Playing Elsewhere to Expedite Stadium Renovations for 2030 World Cup
UD Las Palmas is considering playing at a different stadium to speed up renovations at the Gran Canaria Stadium ahead of the 2030 World Cup, for which it is an official host. This decision comes after no bids were submitted for the stadium upgrade project.
Club president Miguel Ángel Ramírez expressed confidence that alternatives exist for hosting home matches and that they can play “away from home.” He hopes the renovations will be completed by the Cabildo’s target date of July 2029, allowing the stadium to host matches in the tournament featuring Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Local builders have cited the challenge of upgrading the stadium while it remains in regular use as a reason for the lack of interest in bidding for the project. Ramírez remains optimistic about the Cabildo’s commitment to seeing the project through and noted that alterations to the proposal could be made if necessary.
He underscored the importance of hosting the World Cup for the region and mentioned that in March, the Cabildo and the club announced a joint plan where the club would contribute €60 million towards the expansion and renovation in exchange for involvement in the stadium’s management post-2030.
Currently, the Gran Canaria Stadium is owned by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, which is leading the renovation project.
