Five Finalists Announced for Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2027 Poster
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has revealed the five finalists competing to design the official poster for the 2027 Carnival. This decision follows the evaluation of 41 submissions received by the Autonomous Organisation of Festivals and Recreational Activities (OAFAR), marking one of the highest participation levels in recent years.
The selected creatives are Lucía Casanova, Felipe Gómez, Nareme Melián, Eduardo Puyol, and Juliana Serrano. Their designs will reflect the theme “Roma Eterna: El imperio del Carnaval”, with the inaugural gala set for 22 January 2027.
Funding and Development of Designs
Each finalist will receive a prize of £1,000 and has 30 days to present their complete graphic proposal, tailored for the various Carnival materials. Following this stage, the council will conduct an online public vote to determine the winner, who will receive a grand prize of £12,000.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the goal is to create a coherent visual identity for the entirety of the celebration. “We wanted to take a step further and ensure the poster has a real presence throughout the festival, helping to build a recognisable identity across all Carnival platforms.”
Councillor for Fiestas, Javier Caraballero, described the £12,000 award as “a matter of fairness and recognition of our local artists”, emphasising the allure of being part of the historical heritage of the Carnival.
Judging Panel Composition
The evaluation of the 41 entries was conducted by a panel of experts, including:
- Humberto Gonar, journalist and Carnival chronicler
- Santi Castro, designer for the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival
- Enrique Camacho, artistic director for the 2027 gala
- Yeray Piñero, director of the 2027 Carnival competitions
- Erik Air, muralist and graffiti artist
- Astrid González, art historian and promoter
- Adjomar González Pérez, graphic designer
- Patricia Hodgson, Fine Arts graduate and educator
Councillor Javier Caraballero chaired the panel with advisory capacity, alongside María José Gómez Padilla, a technician from the Fiestas department, who served as secretary for the process.
