High Temperatures Force Rescheduling of Major Events in Lanzarote
The Lanzarote Council and the Diocese have announced the rescheduling of the 2026 Solemn Mass of Los Dolores due to a weather warning for high temperatures. Initially set for 11:00 AM on Tuesday, 15 September, in Mancha Blanca, the mass will now take place at 6:00 PM. This change follows a maximum heat alert issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands.
Outdoor Activities Suspended
This adjustment was made in collaboration with the Diocese of the Canary Islands, primarily to minimise public exposure during peak temperatures. The Lanzarote Consortium for Safety and Emergencies has advised that all outdoor sports, recreational, and cultural activities be cancelled between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with forecasted temperatures potentially reaching 37 degrees in inland areas.
Residents are urged to take precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. Recommendations include avoiding direct sun exposure, staying in cool places, reducing physical activity, and drinking water regularly. It’s also stressed that no one should be left in closed vehicles. Anyone experiencing symptoms like dizziness or headaches should seek medical assistance by calling 112. A gradual decline in temperatures is expected on Wednesday, 16 September.
Changes to the Lanzarote Craft Fair Schedule
The extreme weather conditions have also affected the final day of the 37th Lanzarote Craft Fair. This Tuesday, the fair will open only in the afternoon, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The programme will kick off with performances by Parranda Janubio and demonstrations of traditional games.
Starting at 6:00 PM, family workshops will include “Create your Ball with Roseta Technique” and “The Lanzarote Sombrero.” Additional craft workshops will focus on botanical printing on wool and painted ceramics. The music will continue at 7:30 PM with the performance “Ecos de mujer” by Acatife, coinciding with the solemn mass and other afternoon events.
