The main square of El Médano hosted the third Dance Meeting on Wednesday, 19 August, as part of the 31st Folklore Show of the Peoples of Granadilla de Abona.
Kicking off at 8pm, the event showcased Tenerife’s cultural traditions, beginning at Paseo Picacho and finishing in the main square. Featured performances included the Dance of Arches from Charco del Pino, the Varas Dances from Chimiche and Las Vegas, and guest groups such as Cintas de Los Cristianos and La Florida de La Orotava. The vibrant displays highlighted the importance of preserving the cultural and folkloric heritage of the Canary Islands.
Granadilla de Abona’s Mayor, José Domingo Regalado, emphasised the value of such events in the local cultural calendar. “The Folklore Show allows us to connect with our roots, share our traditions, and open Granadilla de Abona to other cultural expressions,” he said. Regalado also acknowledged the crucial role of participating groups in keeping traditions alive for future generations.
Carlos Abismael Díaz, the Councillor for Culture and Festivities, praised the initiative’s growth within the Folklore Show, noting, “This meeting highlights the richness and diversity of our island’s traditional dances.” He thanked all groups involved and underscored the need for communal spaces to share and celebrate cultural heritage.
At the end of the event, gifts were presented to participating groups in recognition of their contributions.
The programme continues today, Thursday 20 August, at 7pm in El Médano’s main square with the Folklore Festival featuring local groups such as Aires de Abona, Alisios del Sur, Guaydil, Sentir Sureño, and Viñático de San Isidro, showcasing the wealth of Granadilla’s folklore.
The 31st Folklore Show will include international and Canary Island performances tomorrow, with the renowned Folk Dance Ensemble Tucovic from Serbia and Ecuador’s Cultural Foundation Ñukanchik, which promotes Ecuadorian cultural memory and traditional expressions. Canary groups, including Tigaray—founded in 1985 and known for popular music—will also perform, culminating in a special appearance alongside the celebrated Canarian artist, Luis Morera.
