The Canary Islands Government has officially approved a significant project to expand the underpass on the LZ-2 road at Camino de Los Fajardo in Tías. This upgrade aims to enhance road safety, functionality, and capacity on Lanzarote.
The project’s estimated cost is €2,958,673.83, including tax. This final approval allows for the necessary administrative processes to move forward with future bidding and construction.
Rosana Melián, the General Director of Road Infrastructure, emphasised that this initiative reflects the Canary Islands Government’s commitment to improving transport infrastructures for the safety and mobility of residents. She stated that the expansion will address an essential connectivity issue for Tías and meet current traffic demands.
The project will include a new structural framework and entrance and exit wings on one side of the underpass, while preserving the existing wings on the opposite side. The underpass will be upgraded with a two-way road, featuring two lanes each 3.5 metres wide, alongside 0.5-metre verges on both sides. A separate three-metre-wide pedestrian footpath will also be constructed, protected by a kerb and railing for safety.
The construction will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to traffic on the LZ-2. This approach allows demolition and the building of the new structure while maintaining road usage. Initially, a micropile screen will be built in the median, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. Traffic will then be redirected to facilitate demolition and excavation work, followed by the construction of the new road surface. After completing the first phase, traffic will switch to the alternative lane to begin the second phase of work.
