Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista Holds Convention in Lanzarote
Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) held its second Isla-Hogar Convention in Arrecife on Saturday, focused on renewing leadership roles within the organisation and outlining its political strategy for the upcoming electoral cycle.
Local representatives from NC-BC were joined by national leaders, including president Natalia Santana, national organisation secretary Ayoze Corujo, and general secretary Luis Campos.
Key positions were updated, with Belén Machín elected as the new president and Yoné Caraballo appointed as the island secretary for Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
One of the event’s highlights was Caraballo’s announcement that he will lead the NC-BC’s candidacy for the Cabildo of Lanzarote in the May 2027 elections. He emphasised the project’s aim to “Recover Lanzarote,” stressing the need to restore local influence over significant decisions affecting the island’s future.
Caraballo called for greater control over strategic issues such as sustainability, housing, water management, land use, and public services, proposing a fundamental shift in priorities for the island’s governance.
On tourism, he firmly stated, “There will be no more tourist beds in Lanzarote” if he becomes president of the Cabildo. He plans to implement a moratorium to halt unrestricted development and prioritise the quality of life for residents.
Addressing the housing crisis, Caraballo suggested regulating the market to protect local families, proposing rent caps and increased taxes on property speculators as many struggle to find affordable homes.
He also advocated for a fully public water management system under the Cabildo’s direct oversight, aiming to ensure a service that is efficient, transparent, and serves the public interest.
Concluding his speech, Caraballo voiced strong support for public healthcare, backing last week’s large protest for the Insular Hospital and against what he termed the gradual dismantling of public health services on the island. “Recovering Lanzarote also means defending strong, quality public services for everyone,” he remarked.
The convention ended with commitment from members to support the new leadership team and focus on building a political alternative for Lanzarote and La Graciosa ahead of the 2027 elections.
