Arrecife to modernise Manolo Millares Street with €3.5 million investment
The Arrecife Town Hall is set to transform Manolo Millares Street, with plans to invest nearly €3.5 million in urban improvements. Mayor Yonathan de León announced the initiative coinciding with the anniversary of the death of renowned Canarian painter Manolo Millares, who lived in Arrecife during his youth.
The project aims to enhance accessibility along the street by creating a green corridor from Vía Medular near the old cemetery to Guenia Street, near Antonio Zerolo School. The plans include a new stormwater drainage system—vital due to the area’s proximity to sea level—modern lighting, an automatic irrigation network, and urban furniture. A small roundabout will also be constructed at the intersection with Taburiente Street to facilitate better access for the Las Salinas neighbourhood, which is home to various public facilities including Correos and a football pitch.
This development forms part of a broader strategy that includes establishing five eco-bulevares to improve connectivity between local neighbourhoods and the city centre. De León affirmed that the tender for Millares Street’s renovation will be issued alongside work on Pérez Galdós Street, with both projects expected to commence this autumn.
Further urban improvement plans for Arrecife include future work on the Theme Park and a second phase of transformation along Fred Olsen Avenue near El Reducto beach. Collaborating with the Cabildo of Lanzarote’s Public Works Directorate, led by Councillor Jacobo Medina, the Town Hall is keen to enhance the region’s urban landscape as part of its €37 million investment plan targeting local communities.
Moreover, the timing of this street renovation coincides with the centenary of Millares’ birth on January 17, 1926. Records indicate that he lived in Arrecife during his adolescence, giving the project added artistic significance.
