Viral Video Misrepresents Puerto del Rosario
A young influencer, Karin H.S., has sparked outrage with a video claiming that Puerto del Rosario is the most dangerous city in the Canary Islands. In the video, he, speaking in a strong Spanish accent, expresses frustration over his portrayal of the region, stating it “gets on his nerves” to describe it that way since it’s his homeland.
Karin H.S. goes on to inaccurately label Puerto del Rosario as the “capital of cocaine,” alleging that a gang of youths is terrorising residents. His claims have been dismissed as false, instilling fear and confusion while making unwarranted insults against the island and its capital. He even advises holidaymakers to “avoid this place.”
He references the ‘Jacosos’, supposedly one of the most aggressive criminal gangs in the Canaries, which he claims engages in extortion, drug trafficking, and violent robberies of holiday homes. These misleading assertions damage the economic reputation of Fuerteventura.
The influencer’s tactics have been labelled as cynical marketing. Despite his attempts to promote a guide during the video, the irony of his message clashes with the alarmist tone adopted when discussing the island’s safety concerns.
While this “trick” may boost his visibility online, the negative image of Puerto del Rosario is likely to persist, given the lasting impact of negative viral content.
