Tenerife Council Encourages Creative Writing in Young Students with “Alternitura” Initiative
The Tenerife Council has launched a new project called “Read to Share and Write/Alternitura,” aimed at enhancing creative writing among Year 6 students. This initiative falls under the Islander Program for Encouraging Reading, Writing, and Oral Skills (PIALTE+) and seeks to promote handwriting and creative expression while encouraging students to voice their opinions.
Efraín Medina, the Councillor for Employment and Education, emphasised the significance of such projects in nurturing writing skills from a young age. He stated that Alternitura represents “a different way of understanding education, closely linked to the local community and the real lives of our youth.” Medina added that the council aims to ensure that every resource in the PIALTE+ catalogue provides opportunities for growth, discovery, and active participation in the community.
Medina highlighted that this new project intends to “open up pathways and offer experiences that complement the work of schools, allowing students to view their surroundings from new perspectives.”
Encouraging Oral Expression
The initiative will be implemented in 30 classrooms across different educational centres in Tenerife, providing 10 hours of interactive sessions for each group. Students will delve into the realms of creative writing, composition, and written communication.
The project takes a playful and innovative approach to handwriting, writing, and communication, giving students the chance to explore new ways to express themselves clearly and coherently. A key aspect of Alternitura is the use of libraries as spaces for discovery and learning. Students will explore various types of libraries to understand how they operate, what resources they offer, and how they can be essential tools for reading, research, and literary creation.
Through this initiative, the council reinforces its commitment to an education that fosters creativity, autonomy, and active participation, enriching students’ learning experiences and strengthening their communication skills.
