Lobos Island Faces Visitor Pressure, Residents Raise Concerns
A recent survey conducted by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura reveals that 72.1% of participants believe the island’s protected natural areas are overwhelmed by visitors, particularly on weekends and during the summer months.
The survey garnered 154 responses, with 91.6% from local residents. Outside of the peak summer season, 44.7% still perceive excessive visitor numbers, while 23.7% think the crowds remain significant.
Concerns highlighted by participants include the regulation of visits, enforcement of rules, and conservation efforts. Lobos Island, in particular, was noted for its limited capacity and the necessity for better access control.
The survey contributes to the development of management plans for the natural parks of Jandía, Corralejo, and Lobos Island, as well as the Betancuria Rural Park. These plans aim to balance visitor access with environmental protection.
Additionally, 88.3% of respondents acknowledged existing restrictions in these areas, although only 68.2% were aware of the consequences of breaching them.
