The recent heatwave in the Canary Islands is finally easing, with temperatures set to drop on Thursday after several days of extreme heat. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the day will be mostly clear, though some cloud is expected in low-lying northern areas.
Temperatures will still be high, reaching up to 34°C in certain mid-altitude regions, particularly those facing south and west. Overall, maximum temperatures are predicted to range from 31°C in Tenerife to around 19°C on El Hierro.
Strong trade winds will be a significant feature of Thursday’s weather, with gusts expected to be especially strong on the south-eastern slopes and in the far north-west of the islands. Late afternoon may see increased wind strength on exposed peaks.
In Gran Canaria, skies will remain mostly clear, with some cloud in the north. Temperatures will be among the hottest in the region, potentially peaking at 34°C in southern and western mid-altitude areas, although a slight decrease is expected.
Minimum temperatures in these areas will not drop below 25°C, meaning warm nights will persist. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach 27°C, with minimums around 23°C.
Wind conditions will remain strong, particularly on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of Gran Canaria, with possible very strong gusts in exposed areas like Las Tirajanas during the early hours.
While the worst of the heatwave seems to be diminishing, Aemet warns that high temperatures, warm nights, and strong trade winds will still impact many parts of the Canary Islands on Thursday.
