Yaiza Council Demands Urgent Access to Beach After Steps Removed
In a unanimous decision on Monday, all four political parties in Yaiza—UPY, CC, PP, and PSOE—approved a motion calling for the urgent restoration of safe access to Playa Abajo in El Golfo. The motion, put forth by Coalición Canaria, highlights the needs of local fishermen and regular beach users.
The Council has urged the Ministry for Ecological Transition to establish a working group involving the Yaiza Council, fishing sector representatives, El Golfo residents, and other relevant entities in order to find a lasting solution.
Additionally, the Council is requesting a detailed technical and legal report on why the access steps to Playa Abajo were demolished without prior agreement. The local authority had previously sought repairs rather than dismantlement.
The institutional statement reiterated the support for affected fishermen and residents while acknowledging the significance of traditional fishing to the local identity and cultural heritage. It emphasised the historical, social, and economic ties of El Golfo to the sea, criticising the demolition as “incomprehensible.”
