Canary Islands Parliament Expresses Solidarity with Venezuela After Earthquakes
The Canary Islands Parliament has issued a statement expressing its deep sorrow for the victims of two recent earthquakes in Venezuela. Lawmakers made a heartfelt appeal for solidarity during a session in which they observed a minute of silence.
According to the United Nations, the economic losses from the earthquakes are estimated at around $6.7 billion, nearly equivalent to Venezuela’s GDP, highlighting the significant impact on everyday life.
The statement noted the close ties between the Canary Islands and Venezuela, where generations of Canarians have sought refuge, opportunities, and hope. It acknowledged the shared history and how the suffering of the Venezuelan people resonates deeply within the islands, particularly due to the loss of Canary Islands representative in Venezuela, Isabel Jara.
The Parliament voiced the distress felt in the Canary Islands regarding the ongoing crisis, urging the international community to continue providing humanitarian support to meet the urgent needs of those affected.
“Today, the Canary Islands stand in solidarity with Venezuela, sharing in their grief and trusting in the resilience and unity of a people who hold a special place in the hearts of our islands,” the statement concluded.
