Residents in Yaiza can now hear the message, “Thank you for placing your waste in the bin,” at certain recycling stations to raise awareness about proper waste disposal. The initiative encourages locals to use the correct bins for organic waste, paper and cardboard, glass, and plastics. It also reminds them that leaving rubbish outside the bins can lead to fines of up to €3,000, as stipulated in the town’s Civic Coexistence Ordinance.
This pilot project, launched three months ago by Mayor Óscar Noda, is the first of its kind in the Canary Islands. Early results suggest success in high-traffic areas where littering has frequently obstructed pedestrian pathways. Mayor Noda expressed a desire to foster a positive message around recycling and discourage antisocial behaviour, which continues to be a concern.
Noda emphasised the joint responsibility of both the council and the community in maintaining a clean environment. He stated that the council will provide the necessary resources to improve cleaning services and that residents must respect their community.
Rubén Arca, the council’s cleanliness councillor, explained that the audio system is equipped with cameras to further discourage littering. The system switches off at night, but lights activate when someone approaches the bins.
In addition, Yaiza is currently reviewing bids from five companies for a new 10-year waste collection contract, estimated at €36 million. This contract will include the collection of organic waste, general waste, cooking oil, electronic appliances, and the establishment of mobile recycling points.
