Canaries to be Named Capital of Social Economy in 2027
Canarias has been designated as the Capital of Social Economy for 2027, a decision celebrated by Angel Víctor Torres, the Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory. He attributed the achievement to the efforts made during his administration.
In a video message, Torres described the announcement from Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz as “magnificent”, promising numerous events next year in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The designation is rooted in recent initiatives, including the Social Economy Law of Canarias and the first Law of Cooperatives, supported unanimously in the Canarian Parliament in 2022. These measures were developed alongside representatives from the sector.
Elena Máñez, spokesperson for the Canarian PSOE, praised the decision as a significant recognition of the previous government’s work under Torres. She highlighted that the recent legislation marked a turning point for the region’s social economy, addressing genuine sector needs and establishing a modern regulatory framework.
Máñez further argued that the social economy represents a more equitable approach to economic development, contrasting it with the wealth-concentrating model promoted by the current Coalition Canaria and Partido Popular government. She asserted that the PSOE supports enterprises that prioritize shared wealth and place individuals at the heart of their operations.
