Guanches Warriors Championship Sees Successful Inaugural Event in Argana
The Guanches Warriors Championship celebrated its first edition with a strong turnout at the recently reopened Pabellón de Deportes in Argana, Lanzarote. The event featured eleven matches, including four amateur and seven professional bouts, providing a platform for local MMA talent.
Organised by local fighter Hecher Sosa with the support of Arrecife City Council, the championship showcased the growing interest in martial arts in the area. Notably, the event included two women’s fights, a first for such competitions in Lanzarote, with prominent athletes like world champion Isabel Calvo and Carolan Olivares, a finalist from The Ultimate Warrior programme, participating.
Mayor Yonathan de León attended the event, highlighting recent improvements to the Pabellón, which had been closed for 13 years due to legal issues. He noted that the venue’s reopening has revitalised the Argana neighbourhood and positioned Arrecife as a host for major sporting events.
“The Guanches Warriors Championship has been a success in its first edition, with a full audience enjoying the excitement of mixed martial arts,” said de León, praising Sosa for spearheading the event. Sports Councillor Eli Merino echoed these sentiments, affirming the council’s commitment to supporting local athletes and events.
The city remains dedicated to promoting sports and visibility for fighters, trainers, and clubs within Arrecife and across the Canary Islands.
