Canary Islands Government Partner with Granadilla de Abona to Protect Cultural Heritage
The Canary Islands Government and Granadilla de Abona Council have initiated a collaboration aimed at preserving the local historical, cultural, and natural heritage. This partnership commenced with a site inspection, where officials assessed the current condition of protected areas to identify necessary interventions for conservation.
The delegation included Miguel Ángel Clavijo, the Director General of Culture and Cultural Heritage, and Mayor José Domingo Regalado, alongside the Council’s Historic Heritage Councillor, Fredi Oramas, and members of the citizen platform ‘DefensAbona’. During this meeting, they laid the groundwork for a future cooperation agreement to support essential rehabilitation projects.
The inspection began at the protected natural monument of Montaña Ifara and Los Riscos, known for its two volcanos and remarkable landscapes. After evaluating its needs, Clavijo highlighted the significance of this initial assessment, stating, “This first meeting marks the start of collaborative efforts between our institutions,” and noted Granadilla de Abona’s exceptional cultural heritage.
Next, the team visited Charco del Pino to examine the condition of the Casona and the surrounding Montaña Chiñama. Here, discussions focused on rehabilitation strategies, not just physically restoring spaces but also enhancing their connection to local history. Mayor Regalado described this institutional partnership as a strategic opportunity to recover historically significant sites, asserting, “It is our duty to preserve this legacy and share it with our community.”
Councillor Oramas emphasized the ongoing efforts from his department to protect and restore local heritage, stating that the visit enhances their work and opens new collaborative paths for significant projects.
The role of the local community is seen as crucial in this preservation initiative. The council recognised ‘DefensAbona’ for its continuous research and advocacy efforts in promoting and safeguarding local heritage, which is vital for fostering awareness and conservation among residents.
Ultimately, the goal of these efforts is to coordinate necessary interventions to rehabilitate important sites, enhance their historical value, and ensure that Granadilla de Abona’s natural wealth and collective memory endure for future generations.
