Investigation into Lanzarote’s Public Administration Underway
Pedro San Ginés, the General Secretary of Coalición Canaria in Lanzarote, expressed confidence that justice will thoroughly investigate and uphold accountability regarding the so-called Sosa case. This follows the conclusion of investigations by the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas, which found reasonable grounds for potential administrative misconduct, linked to possible offences against public administration. The investigation revolves around Decree 5684/2021, issued during María Dolores Corujo’s presidency at the Lanzarote Cabildo.
Instead of archiving the case, the Provincial Prosecutor has decided to forward all documentation to the Supreme Court, as it involves María Dolores Corujo Berriel, a current member of Congress who holds parliamentary immunity.
San Ginés stated, “For years, the PSOE tried to portray this as a political strategy from Coalición Canaria. Today, the Prosecutor’s Office dismantles that narrative by finding evidence of possible administrative misconduct and passing the case to the Supreme Court.”
He noted that the Prosecutor’s decision does not amount to closure but indicates sufficient elements for the Supreme Court prosecutor to assess the continuation of the case concerning Corujo’s status as an immunised official.
At the heart of the investigation is how Decree 5684/2021 was used by Juan Manuel Sosa. He has brought it before the courts, allegedly seeking to justify actions that, according to the Prosecutor’s findings, may have breached legal requirements for public officials and the appropriate management of island resources.
“The investigation must determine all responsibilities. However, it’s hard to believe such a political operation could unfold without the involvement of former presidents of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres and former Lanzarote Cabildo president María Dolores Corujo,” San Ginés remarked.
He concluded, “If María Dolores Corujo had any political integrity, she would resign from her seat in Congress and apologise for first promoting this criminal misconduct and then expecting the people of Lanzarote to bear Sosa’s debts. I know she won’t do this, but I hope justice reaches its conclusion and any criminal responsibilities are addressed fully.”
