Work is progressing on the expansion of the San Marcial del Rubicón Sports Centre in Playa Blanca, with the local council investing €1.3 million in the project, which is co-funded by the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
The new facility will feature soft-surface courts designed for beach sports such as beach volleyball, beach football, and beach handball. It will include a 2,500 square metre accessible recreational area, currently under construction, as part of the expansion of the existing sports centre near Las Coloradas.
In addition to the sand courts, the facility will offer changing rooms, an exercise area, shaded zones, a kiosk, terrace, perimeter fencing, and lighting. The project is financially backed by both the local council and the Cabildo through the Municipal Cooperation Plan for 2026.
Óscar Noda, the mayor of Yaiza, highlighted the partnership between the institutions, noting that the Cabildo is contributing €757,000 while the local council is investing €543,000. “We are taking advantage of the adjacent plot to build and provide our citizens and youth with a new recreational sporting space,” he said.
Angel Lago, Yaiza’s councillor for Sports and Public Works, added that the project will also enhance the lighting in both the new area and the previously completed first phase. “We aim to create and improve spaces for sports and family gatherings, which also beautify the environment,” he stated.
In addition, Yaiza is launching a tender for improvements and new facilities at the Playa Blanca football pitch, with an estimated budget of €2.2 million. This project will include seating, changing rooms, a café, storage spaces, and lighting.
