Local Hero Welcomed in Tegueste After World Cup Triumph
Over 4,000 people gathered in front of Tegueste Town Hall to celebrate Pedri’s return after winning the World Cup with the Spanish national football team. Despite the scorching heat, fans filled the Plaza de San Marcos to catch a glimpse of their hometown hero.
Among them was Ángela from La Orotava, who eagerly anticipated seeing her favourite player. “I’ll be so emotional when he appears,” she said, hoping for his autograph on her Spanish jersey. Martin and Sergio also came from the same area, hoping to get Pedri’s signature on their Barcelona shirt.
Carmen, a lifelong Barcelona supporter from La Cuesta, expressed her excitement. As a member of the local fan club, she proudly recounted a treasured gift from the star player.
The crowd wasn’t just local; fans travelled from as far as the Basque Country and Catalonia for the occasion. Some sported the colours of neighbouring club, Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, where Pedri began his professional career.
Mayor Juan Norberto Padilla praised Pedri as an exceptional ambassador for Tegueste, noting, “Today we symbolically return a small part of what he makes us feel every time he plays.”
After a brief delay, Pedri emerged shortly after 5:30 PM, joined by local officials, family, and friends to greet the enthusiastic crowd. He shared his experiences from the World Cup, including celebrating teammate Ferran Torres’ crucial goal, and reflected on his humble beginnings in the village.
At just 23, the Tenerife native already boasts an impressive career, culminating in the World Cup trophy he proudly lifted in front of his hometown.
