The Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce successfully hosted the “Local Talent and Technology 2026 Hackathon” yesterday, attracting a full house at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos. Young participants came together to develop innovative solutions to the island’s challenges.
This event marked the second gathering of the “Dissemination of R&D&I” programme, which aims to spark interest in science, technology, and innovation, following the success of its first session, “Science for All,” which engaged 315 schoolchildren last September.
Notable attendees included Soledad Monzón, the Chamber’s second vice-president, and Carmen Alonso, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura’s Councillor for New Technologies, who represents the insular institution collaborating on this project alongside El Talentón.
Participants worked in teams to address real issues facing Fuerteventura, focusing on sustainability, resource management, blue economy, and tourism innovation. The goal was to demonstrate how young talent, creativity, and collaboration can generate practical proposals for the island.
Attendees benefited from talks by industry professionals, structured into five training sessions, and received guidance from five specialised mentors throughout their project development.
The hackathon methodology integrated problem analysis, creative dynamics, and solution design. Teams were tasked with transforming their initial ideas into concrete proposals and preparing a pitch to present them.
Looking ahead, the event set the stage for the hackathon final on December 3rd during the “Applied Innovation Fair: Solutions for the Future,” which concludes the R&D&I programme. Three finalist projects will compete for prizes of €500, €300, and €150 for the best ideas.
Through this initiative, the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce aims to foster innovation among younger generations, promote entrepreneurship, and create opportunities for youth to contribute to future solutions for the island.
The “Dissemination of R&D&I” programme is funded by the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, in partnership with the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation, and Information Society (ACIISI), and this event received support from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and El Talentón.
