Lanzarote saw a modest increase in tourism in the first seven months of 2026, welcoming 2,034,207 visitors, up just 0.7% from 2,019,794 during the same period in 2025. This growth is below 1%, indicating a stable yet limited increase in tourism on the island.
In contrast, the broader Canary Islands experienced a decline of 0.7% in tourist arrivals, with Fuerteventura down 3.6%, Tenerife down 2.1%, and Gran Canaria down 0.5%. This stability is particularly notable given the current international challenges, including geopolitical uncertainties, inflation, and climate change effects, which are impacting the economy and travel decisions.
Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, described the figures as positive, stressing that maintaining a stable tourist model is essential for employment, air connectivity, and the local economy. He noted that remaining stable while other islands struggle highlights Lanzarote’s resilience.
Economic indicators for the island show a more significant boost compared to visitor numbers. Daily tourist spending in the second quarter of 2026 rose to €181.90, reflecting a 17.7% increase from €154.56 in the same quarter of 2025. Additionally, accommodation revenues increased to approximately €607.1 million from €569 million, a 6.71% rise, marking a record high for the seven-month span.
The average daily rate for stays in Lanzarote also saw a rise to €130.60, up 6.64% from €122.47 the previous year. Héctor Fernández, CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, emphasised that these figures reveal a trend of generating more value tourism rather than solely focusing on visitor numbers.
In July, Lanzarote welcomed 316,836 tourists, a 6.4% increase compared to July 2025, largely driven by a 38.8% rise in visitors from mainland Spain. International tourism also increased by 2.2%. However, SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote considers the year-to-date data provides a clearer view of tourism trends than isolated monthly figures.
Betancort concluded that the overall trends support sustainable tourism and ongoing economic and employment opportunities amidst global uncertainties.
