Emotional Letter Wins Literary Contest in Puerto del Carmen
The heartfelt letter titled “Para abuela” has claimed the top prize in the literary contest Carta para una fiesta. This touching narrative recounts the correspondence of a seafaring grandfather, promising to return for the festivities of Carmen while “listening to the tinkling of the starry nets.”
The results of this eagerly awaited competition, held in Puerto del Carmen, were announced this week during an emotional ceremony filled with memories.
Organised by the Tías Town Council, under the direction of cultural officer Pepa González, the event was part of the popular celebrations for La Tiñosa, honouring Our Lady of Carmen.
Top Winners of the Contest
This year’s contest spotlighted three remarkable writers:
- First Prize: Néstor García Martín for Para abuela, submitted under the pseudonym Josicúo.
- Second Prize: María Alonso Hernández, who wrote under the name Amalia Lucerito.
- Third Prize: Juana Aroa Pérez, participating as Araceli.
Honouring Memory and Traditions
The awards were presented at the El Fondeadero Civic Centre in the presence of Tías Mayor José Juan Cruz, deputy mayor Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, and festival councillor Miriam Hernández. They congratulated the winners for their significant contributions to the area’s literary activities and for helping to preserve local memories.
The judging panel, comprising writers Myriam Ybot, Ignacio Romero, and Ico Toledo, praised the ability of the entries to emotionally engage readers through their epistolary voices. Ybot offered particular congratulations, highlighting the precious words dedicated to the people of La Tiñosa and their traditions, which will be remembered through the winners’ writings.
Musical Finale at El Fondeadero
To conclude the evening, after the presentation of prize vouchers and decorative gifts, attendees enjoyed a musical performance from the trio of Cristian Morales, Gabriela Rodríguez, and Rebeca Álvarez, adding a finishing touch to a night dedicated to literature and the culture of Lanzarote.
