New Fibre Optic Link in Costa Calma to Boost Communications
Fuerteventura has taken steps to enhance its digital communications with a new submarine fibre optic link completed by Canalink in Costa Calma. This connection links to the main cable of the RING project.
The new infrastructure will increase network capacity and improve the security and stability of communications, particularly in the southern region of the island. It will also provide alternative communication routes, reducing reliance on a single link in the event of outages.
The link connects an underwater junction to the beach at Matas Blancas in Costa Calma, while the main cable will extend to connect Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote through a new underwater fibre optic network.
The project was supported by the cable-laying ship Teliri, which is also responsible for installing the main cable. Following the completion of the Fuerteventura connection, the ship will continue laying infrastructure between the eastern islands.
This new link was funded by the Ministry for Digital Transformation, with the RING project receiving additional European financing. The initiative aims to prepare the telecommunications network in the Canary Islands for the anticipated increase in digital demand in the coming years.
