New Police Station Opens in El Cotillo Ahead of Festival
A new local police office has been inaugurated in El Cotillo, fulfilling a long-standing request from the community. The facility, managed by the La Oliva Town Council under Mayor Isaí Blanco, is located at the D. Pedro Hernández Morales bus stop. This development comes just before the first weekend of celebrations for the town’s patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje.
The new office aims to enhance local safety by decentralising police presence from Corralejo, benefiting not only El Cotillo but also surrounding areas like El Roque, Lajares, and La Oliva. It is equipped with an emergency intercom that connects directly to central police services for rapid response.
This initiative is part of broader improvements in community safety launched at the start of the current legislative term. The police force has expanded significantly, growing from 28 to 48 officers.
Additionally, the town has made strides in various services for residents and visitors, including establishing a medical centre, starting the renovation of the seafront promenade, and improving accessibility along with the urban renewal programme benefiting local homes.
Mayor Isaí Blanco highlighted the importance of these safety advancements, stating, “Improving security in our municipality has always been a top priority. We are now able to provide a local police office in El Cotillo, responding directly to the needs expressed by residents.”
Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, noted that the new police office is a result of collaboration with various administrations to meet community security needs.
Meanwhile, municipal councillor Juan José Rodríguez emphasised that the office addresses ongoing safety demands, especially during festivities like the current celebrations, which will continue until August 23.
Transport councillor Luis González stated that the project aims to enhance both municipal safety and the oversight of the area. This move aligns with the local government’s commitment to improving security and responsiveness in a developing community like El Cotillo.
