New Cultural Ties Between Galicia and Gran Canaria
The Galician Municipalities of the French Way Association and the towns of Gáldar and Tejeda have signed a partnership agreement to enhance cultural and tourist cooperation between Galicia and the Canary Islands, with a focus on the Camino de Santiago.
At a signing ceremony led by Gáldar’s Deputy Mayor, Julio Mateo Castillo, the mayors of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, and Tejeda, Francisco Perera, confirmed the agreement—initially approved in Gáldar on April 11. This agreement aims to promote cultural exchanges, including joint events such as art exhibitions, music and dance festivals, and food fairs. These initiatives are designed to foster mutual understanding of each region’s traditions and customs.
Teodoro Sosa highlighted that the partnership goes beyond mere collaboration, emphasising the shared commitment of communities dedicated to their people and heritage. He stressed that the Camino serves as a remarkable avenue to generate movement and opportunities, enriching local culture, customs, and the economy.
Francisco Perera expressed his pride in being part of this partnership, hoping for a supportive environment for pilgrims navigating the Camino in Gran Canaria. He pledged that Tejeda would assist and encourage pilgrims on their journey, reassuring them that while the path may be challenging, it leads to rewarding experiences.
Begoña Balado, representing the Galician association, welcomed the inclusion of the three Canary Island municipalities, affirming that they would walk together as one community.
The Galician delegation is currently participating in the major celebrations of the Santiago de Gáldar Festival, concluding with a solemn procession in honour of the Apostle Santiago on Saturday, July 25.
