The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has reviewed the results of a public survey initiated by the Ministry of Territorial Planning, led by Nereida Calero, as part of the participatory process for the development of Natural Resource Management Plans (PORN) for the natural parks of Jandía, Corralejo, Islote de Lobos, and the Rural Park of Betancuria.
Open from June until July 15, the survey garnered 154 responses, with 91.6% from Fuerteventura residents. The findings highlight residents’ feelings about the use of these spaces, showing strong support for further protection and tailored management.
Cabildo President Lola García commented on the light-hearted reactions to the acronym, stating that while the jokes were welcome if they sparked interest and participation, the issue at hand is serious: determining how to safeguard Fuerteventura’s natural spaces and planning for its future.
A notable finding indicates that 72.1% of respondents feel that too many people visit protected natural areas during weekends and summer months. This concern persists for 44.7% throughout the year, with an additional 23.7% believing there are many visitors, though not excessively so.
García emphasised the need to respect Fuerteventura’s limits, noting that this process allows citizens to voice their concerns, many of which align with the Cabildo’s goals of managing and protecting the territory to reduce pressure on the environment. “Caring for Fuerteventura means understanding the need for limits,” she added.
Survey responses highlighted concerns such as managing visitor numbers at sensitive spots, ensuring compliance with regulations, and improving conservation, maintenance, and accessibility.
Islote de Lobos was frequently mentioned by participants regarding visitor numbers, capacity, and management.
Calero explained that each area has unique characteristics and values. The PORN will provide updated tools for managing these spaces, ensuring that enjoyment is compatible with their conservation.
She noted that this survey is part of a broader participatory process involving feedback from local councils, Cabildo departments, political groups, professional associations, and community organisations. “We wanted to broaden participation and hear from the public directly, which will aid in making informed decisions,” Calero stated.
Results also revealed that 88.3% of respondents were aware of usage restrictions in natural spaces, while 68.2% understood the consequences of non-compliance, highlighting the need to reinforce awareness of these regulations.
The Cabildo will continue to integrate the feedback into the ongoing development of the PORN and the update of Fuerteventura’s natural planning.
