The Candelaria Town Hall in Tenerife is set to introduce two annual pilgrimages in honour of the Canary Islands’ patron saint, celebrated on 15 August. This decision aims to facilitate pilgrimages along paths and forest trails, as soaring temperatures often hinder the journey in August.
Mayor Mari Brito announced the plan, indicating that discussions will begin with the Dominican Fathers about this initiative. Over the coming months, the council will engage with various organizations to organize one pilgrimage in August and another in February.
Brito highlighted that February’s cooler weather makes it easier for pilgrims, especially those from the island’s northern regions, to journey to Candelaria via forest paths. This route is often inaccessible in August due to fire risks and high temperatures.
“We want to ensure everyone can come and see the Patron,” she stated.
